Peter Carl Fabergé's work was defined by his inventiveness and commitment to quality, ultimately catching the attention of the Russian Tsar, Alexander III. A very talented jeweler and an astute businessman, Fabergé took over his father's St. Petersburg jewelry business in 1872. Within the next ten years, he connected the name of Fabergé with the highest standards of quality and innovation. The most famous of Fabergé's works were his Easter eggs, originally commissioned by Alexander III in 1885 as a gift to his wife. The first egg so delighted the Tsar that subsequent commissions, fifty seven in all, were ultimately granted the house of Fabergé, the only specification that each egg be unique and contain a surprise. The current line of Fabergé objets d'arts, egg objects and jewelry reflects the same dedication to quality and uniqueness as those items produced over one hundred years ago for Russian royalty.
